Do Breadcrumbs Go Bad

While whipping it up, you might notice that you’re out of breadcrumbs. That wouldn’t be much of an issue if it weren’t for it being one of the main parts of your dish. The question is, are they still good to eat? And do breadcrumbs go bad? Let’s find out!

You‘d usually decide to head to the store to get a new pack, but just as you’re about to head out, you remember that you’d stored some breadcrumbs away before.

Can Breadcrumbs Go Bad (expire)?

Even though they last longer than bread, breadcrumbs do go bad after a certain amount of time has passed; typically after around 6 months of their production date if stored well.

Breadcrumbs will expire faster if they’re exposed to moisture, which can lead to mold.

There are various signs to check to see if your breadcrumbs are still edible or if they’ve already gone bad.

The first thing you’ll notice is mold. If the breadcrumbs completely outlived their shelf life, just like regular bread, you’ll start to notice mold developing inside the package.

If you don’t see any mold but still want to make sure they’re okay to use, another thing you need to check for is the smell. If you notice a stale or unpleasant smell coming from the breadcrumbs, then they’re most likely already past their usage date.

And if you somehow mistakenly ate some and noticed them tasting sour, then take it as a sign that they’ve gone bad and should be thrown away.

Can You Still Use Expired Breadcrumbs?

If you checked and found that your breadcrumbs didn’t have any of the aforementioned signs, then it’s still okay to use even if it’s past its expiry date.

However, you need to be sure that it has not gone bad yet. And if possible, it’d be better to use a newly bought package instead. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

What Happens If You Eat Expired Breadcrumbs?

The answer will differ depending on whether the breadcrumbs have gone bad or not.

If the breadcrumbs are just a little old, then nothing will happen. However, if they had mold or any type of bacterial contamination, then it would most likely lead to food poisoning.

Homemade Breadcrumbs

If you find that your breadcrumbs are inedible and you don’t have the time to buy new ones, you can always try making your very own breadcrumbs at home!

All you’ll need is a loaf of bread.

First, cut up a few slices of the bread and grind them up in the food processor. After you’ve got them into crumbs, spread a baking sheet on a baking tray before laying the newly made crumbs evenly.

You’ll need to preheat the oven to around 300 degrees Fahrenheit before baking the crumbs for a few minutes. Take them out once you notice that they’ve lost all their moisture and turned dry and crispy.

Let them cool down for a few minutes, and voilà, you’ve got your homemade breadcrumbs!
